1 Model Criticism for Long-Form Text Generation Language models have demonstrated the ability to generate highly fluent text; however, it remains unclear whether their output retains coherent high-level structure (e.g., story progression). Here, we propose to apply a statistical tool, model criticism in latent space, to evaluate the high-level structure of the generated text. Model criticism compares the distributions between real and generated data in a latent space obtained according to an assumptive generative process. Different generative processes identify specific failure modes of the underlying model. We perform experiments on three representative aspects of high-level discourse -- coherence, coreference, and topicality -- and find that transformer-based language models are able to capture topical structures but have a harder time maintaining structural coherence or modeling coreference. 3 authors · Oct 16, 2022
- mALBERT: Is a Compact Multilingual BERT Model Still Worth It? Within the current trend of Pretained Language Models (PLM), emerge more and more criticisms about the ethical andecological impact of such models. In this article, considering these critical remarks, we propose to focus on smallermodels, such as compact models like ALBERT, which are more ecologically virtuous than these PLM. However,PLMs enable huge breakthroughs in Natural Language Processing tasks, such as Spoken and Natural LanguageUnderstanding, classification, Question--Answering tasks. PLMs also have the advantage of being multilingual, and,as far as we know, a multilingual version of compact ALBERT models does not exist. Considering these facts, wepropose the free release of the first version of a multilingual compact ALBERT model, pre-trained using Wikipediadata, which complies with the ethical aspect of such a language model. We also evaluate the model against classicalmultilingual PLMs in classical NLP tasks. 1 Critic-CoT: Boosting the reasoning abilities of large language model via Chain-of-thoughts Critic Self-critic has become an important mechanism for enhancing the reasoning performance of LLMs. However, current approaches mainly involve basic prompts without further training, which tend to be over-simplified, leading to limited accuracy.Moreover, there is a lack of in-depth investigation of the relationship between LLM's ability to criticism and its task-solving performance.To address these issues, we propose Critic-CoT, a novel framework that pushes LLMs toward System-2-like critic capability, via step-wise CoT reasoning format and distant-supervision data construction, without the need for human annotation. Experiments on GSM8K and MATH show that via filtering out invalid solutions or iterative refinement, our enhanced model boosts task-solving performance, which demonstrates the effectiveness of our method. Further, we find that training on critique and refinement alone improves the generation. - Aligning Large Language Models from Self-Reference AI Feedback with one General Principle In aligning large language models (LLMs), utilizing feedback from existing advanced AI rather than humans is an important method to scale supervisory signals. However, it is highly challenging for AI to understand human intentions and societal values, and provide accurate preference feedback based on these. Current AI feedback methods rely on powerful LLMs, carefully designed specific principles to describe human intentions, and are easily influenced by position bias. To address these issues, we propose a self-reference-based AI feedback framework that enables a 13B Llama2-Chat to provide high-quality feedback under simple and general principles such as ``best for humanity``. Specifically, we allow the AI to first respond to the user's instructions, then generate criticism of other answers based on its own response as a reference, and finally determine which answer better fits human preferences according to the criticism. Additionally, we use a self-consistency method to further reduce the impact of position bias, and employ semantic perplexity to calculate the preference strength differences between different answers. Experimental results show that our method enables 13B and 70B Llama2-Chat annotators to provide high-quality preference feedback, and the policy models trained based on these preference data achieve significant advantages in benchmark datasets through reinforcement learning. 9 authors · Jun 16, 2024
- Releasing the CRaQAn (Coreference Resolution in Question-Answering): An open-source dataset and dataset creation methodology using instruction-following models Instruction-following language models demand robust methodologies for information retrieval to augment instructions for question-answering applications. A primary challenge is the resolution of coreferences in the context of chunking strategies for long documents. The critical barrier to experimentation of handling coreferences is a lack of open source datasets, specifically in question-answering tasks that require coreference resolution. In this work we present our Coreference Resolution in Question-Answering (CRaQAn) dataset, an open-source dataset that caters to the nuanced information retrieval requirements of coreference resolution in question-answering tasks by providing over 250 question-answer pairs containing coreferences.
